In 2018, Dan Monceaux curated a first-of-kind art exhibition to celebrate the diversity and wonder of South Australia’s marine life. The exhibition was held in the Auditorium Gallery attached to the City of West Torrens library, and featured several of his own works, and additional works by divers and snorkelers, including Jeff Bowey, Paul Macdonald, Darryll Rivett, Frances Allan, Nathan Cummins, Andrew Fox, Krystal Puxley, Sebastien Landat, Karolyn Landat, Carl Charter, Adrian Wood and Dean Spraakman. The exhibition featured video works, and the opening event was accompanied by a dub techno soundtrack by Alessandro Crimi (from his album, Underwater Explorations). The exhibition was held in September-October 2018, and was opened by prominent oceanographer Jochen Kaempf, who at the time was an Associate Professor at Flinders University. The exhibition was significant as it attracted entries from photographers from as far afield as Port Augusta and Port Lincoln, with featured locations reaching from the Neptune Islands in Spencer Gulf to the freshwater systems of the state’s South East. Many of the state’s iconic species featured, including the Great white shark, giant Australian cuttlefish, Leafy sea dragon and Striped pyjama squid. Works were prepared by Dan and printed by Atkins, then framed and hung as a uniform set to dramatic effect in the circular space. A selection of images from the exhibition features below.
